Coins that need a memo or tag: depositing XRP, XLM, TON and similar safely from the Philippines

Some coins share one deposit address among many users and rely on a memo or tag to know whose deposit it is. How to spot those coins on Binance, OKX, Bybit and Bitget, fill the field correctly and what to do if you forgot it.

Sending USDT on most networks needs only an address. A handful of coins work differently. For XRP, Stellar, TON on many exchanges, Cosmos-based coins and some others, the exchange gives everyone the same deposit address and tells deposits apart using a short extra number or text called a memo, tag, comment or destination tag. If you send to the right address without it, the coins reach the exchange but not your account. Recovery is sometimes possible and sometimes not, and it always takes longer than getting the field right the first time.

How to tell a coin needs a memo

On the deposit screen of Binance, OKX, Bybit or Bitget, select the coin and network and look carefully at what appears. If there is a second field labelled MEMO, Tag, Comment or similar alongside the address, the coin requires it. Exchanges usually add a warning in a box or pop-up stating that both are needed. Do not assume the rule is the same for every network of a coin; a token may need a memo on one chain and not on another. Read the deposit page for the exact coin and network you will use.

Filling it in on the sending side

In your sending wallet or the other exchange's withdrawal form, look for a matching field, which may be called memo, tag, destination tag, comment or note. Copy the value from the deposit page rather than typing it, and check every digit. Some Filipino wallet apps hide this field under an optional or advanced section; open it. If the sending app has no memo field at all for that coin, stop: send to a different destination or use a different coin and network that does not need one.

Test with a small amount

Before a large transfer, send a small amount with the memo filled in and wait for it to show as credited in your deposit history. Note the time it took and the transaction ID. Then send the rest using the same address and memo. Saving the destination in an address book can help, but check whether the address book also stored the memo, since some only save the address. A test costs one network fee; a missing memo can cost the whole transfer.

If you forgot the memo

Do not send again hoping to fix it. Open the exchange's help centre and search for deposits without a memo or tag; most exchanges have a self-service form or a support route for this. Prepare the transaction ID, the coin, the network, the amount, the sending address and a screenshot of the withdrawal record from the sending app. Recovery may take time and may carry a fee, which the help article will describe. Keep everything in one note until the case is closed.

Scenario checkpoint

  • Look for a second memo or tag field on the deposit page for the exact coin and network.
  • Open optional or advanced sections in the sending app to find its memo field.
  • Send a small test with the memo and wait until it shows as credited before the main transfer.
  • Confirm your address book saved the memo as well as the address.
  • If the memo was missing, use the exchange's recovery route with the transaction ID ready.
