Perpetual swaps and the funding fee: a plain explanation for traders in the Philippines

Guides · 2026-10-01

Perpetual swaps never expire, and that creates a design problem: how do you keep their price in line with the market they follow? Exchanges answer with a recurring transfer between traders on opposite sides, usually called the funding fee. Whether you pay or receive it depends on which side you hold and on market conditions at the time of settlement. This article is for readers in the Philippines who want to understand that mechanism before touching derivatives. It does not encourage leverage, does not give rates, which change constantly, and does not forecast anything.

The problem funding solves

Without an expiry date, nothing would ordinarily pull a perpetual contract back toward the spot price. The funding mechanism provides that pull. If the contract trades above the reference, buyers generally compensate sellers, which makes holding long exposure more expensive and encourages the price to settle. If the contract trades below the reference, the direction flips. It is a balancing device, not a fee that goes to the platform.

Where the figures appear

On the contract screen, platforms normally display the current rate and the countdown to the next settlement, and their help centres explain how the rate is calculated. Read those pages yourself. Keep in mind that the displayed number is provisional until settlement and that being long or short determines the direction of the payment. Social media posts about rates are quickly out of date.

Adding it to your own tracking

Your account history records every funding payment made or received. Open it regularly and write the totals next to your trading fees. Many people evaluate a trade only by entry and exit, then discover that several settlements quietly changed the outcome. The longer you hold, the more this matters, so think about your intended holding period when you open a position.

Keep it in proportion

Funding is only one of several risks. Leverage can lead to automatic closing of a position when the price moves against you, regardless of funding. Begin with a tiny position, look at the liquidation price before you confirm and never use money you cannot afford to lose. Choosing not to trade derivatives at all is entirely reasonable.
