Splitting a trading float from long-term holdings in the Philippines

Guides · 2026-09-30

When long-term holdings and active trading money sit in the same exchange balance, two problems appear. First, every trade potentially puts your long-term savings at risk, because nothing separates them from the funds you are using. Second, it becomes hard to judge whether your trading is actually working, since gains and losses blur together with long-term movements. Splitting a defined trading float from long-term holdings fixes both. This guide explains how readers in the Philippines can do that when using Binance, OKX, Bybit or Bitget. It does not recommend any custody method; consider your own circumstances and the platforms' help centres.

Decide the size of the float

Choose a trading float: the amount you are prepared to use for active trading. Write the figure down. It should be small enough that losing it would not damage your long-term plans. Everything else is long-term holdings and is not to be used for trading. Having a written number makes it easier to resist the temptation to dip into savings after a loss.

Separate the balances

Keep the trading float in its own place, such as a dedicated sub-account where the platform supports it, or a separate funding account. Long-term holdings might stay in a different account or be withdrawn to a wallet you control, depending on your preferences and understanding of self-custody. The aim is that a trading mistake cannot touch the long-term balance without a deliberate transfer.

Rules for moving money

Set rules for transfers between the two. For example, top up the float only once a month and only after reviewing your results, and move profits above a certain level to long-term holdings on a fixed date. Never transfer from long-term holdings in the middle of a losing trade. Keep a note of every transfer with its date and reason.

Review honestly

Each month, look at the float on its own: what it started with, what it ended with and how many top-ups it needed. That figure tells you whether your trading is helping or hurting. If the float keeps needing top-ups, consider reducing activity rather than enlarging the float. Keep security on both balances strong, with unique passwords, a second factor and an address allowlist.
